Virtual Proctoring with Respondus Monitor

Virtual Proctoring with Respondus Monitor (RM) - Respondus Monitor is an online proctoring tool for LockDown Browser (LDB) that uses the student's webcam and microphone to record them during testing and does not require the instructor to be present allowing students to test anytime during test availability dates and times. Students must display a valid photo ID and complete an environment check as part of the start up sequence. After students take the tests, our professional proctors review the video and audio of the testing session found in the class results of the Respondus LockDown Browser dashboard. Results are provided to the instructor no later than three business days from the test deadline date provided to the RM team. Students who are suspected of academic dishonesty are referred to Student Conduct.

RM requires that the student have access to a laptop or desktop computer with a working camera and microphone. Windows computers, Mac computers, and Chromebooks work with LDB. (Note: iPads, tablets, and smartphones will not work due to the limitations of Blackboard and LDB.) Students need to download LDB to their computers. RM Readiness Test & System Check for Students

All courses that use Respondus Monitor (RM) should have our RM module loaded into the course. This module includes all training and information needed for students to test virtually. The Readiness Test & System Check prepares students for testing virtually and ensures that their technology works. Students will have three opportunities to show that they understand the process and are committed to academic integrity while testing with RM.

During the first two weeks of class, students will complete these steps for successful virtual testing with Respondus Monitor:

  • Step 1: Download, install, and run LockDown Browser
  • Step 2: Prepare for and complete the Environment Check
  • Step 3: Take the Readiness Test & System Check according to the attempt deadline dates and feedback dates. This test requires students to:
    • Agree with Academic Integrity Statements.
    • Perform the virtual testing Startup Process including showing a photo ID and completing an environment check.
    • CSCC's professional proctors will review the testing session and provide students with a score and feedback on their performance.
  • Step 4: Check their Grade on the Readiness Test and Download their Completion Certificate when they pass with a score of 1.
    • A score a 1 means that the student successfully completed the Readiness Test & System Check and the Completion Certificate is available for download.
    • A score of 0 means they should review the feedback and try again. Students who don't follow the procedures are coached by Online Student Success Guides.

Note: Students who do not complete the Readiness Test & System Check by the attempt due dates may not be proctored in a timely manner. If the attempt due dates have passed, please contact onlinetestsupport@cscc.edu and include the student name(s) and Course ID so the test may be proctored.

Live training is available to students by attending one of the Zoom training sessions.

RM Information for Faculty

Readiness Test & System Check scores do not impact the students' grade in your course. However, a separate instructor-offered extra credit gradebook item may be created. Please do not change the score in the Readiness Test column.

Best practices for offering extra credit and/or restricting RM testing:

  • Create a RM Completion assignment worth 0 points for students to upload the Completion Certificate. Instructor will need to grade this assignment to grant points to the student.
  • To restrict access, you will need two versions of the test:
    • One for the Testing Center with the appropriate settings
    • One for the RM settings using release conditions based on the RM Completion assignment or membership

Include clear policies in your syllabus regarding:

  • Consequences for failing to adhere to the testing rules and procedures.
  • Procedures for students who need to leave the room due to illness or emergencies during a Respondus Monitor test (e.g., test nullification and/or rescheduling).

RM Test Registration for Proctoring

To register any tests, including the Readiness Test & System Check (practice test), for RM proctoring, use the Respondus Monitor Registration Tracker.

If you are entering tests for an adjunct, list the adjunct as the instructor. This ensures that proctors email the adjunct diretly when proctoring is complete. However, keep in mind that only you, as the person who created the entry, will be able to make changes to it.

If a test's Due Date changes, please update it in the tracker to avoid proctoring delays.

If a student does not have the proper equipment or testing environment, the faculty member may contact the Testing Center and ask that they administer the test to the student. You will need to register a makeup exam in RegisterBlast so these students can make appointments for testing.
